In the Zone...

The Dukies spanked Virginia earlier tonight and they did it by going to a 2-3 zone. Huh? Down 26-25 and Sean Singletary penetrating at will, Coach K went for to the Jimmy B zone and boy, did it pay off. From there, Duke went on an 18-3 run and really never looked back. Virginia made a few small runs but when they needed a big shot, Duke got it from a number of usual suspects, mainly Kyle Singler and DeMarcus Nelson.

The saddest thing about Virginia's season is that Sean Singletary probably only has two games left in his career since they won't be playing in any postseason tournament unless they make a dramatic run in the ACC Tournament. Singletary has electrified crowds around the ACC for four years and it truly is a shame to see him go but let's face it, I'm not losing any sleep over it.

My main concern is the Blue Devils and at 26-3, they have overachieved to this point. To me, Duke's only chance to make the Final 4 and take a shot at the national championship is to land that #1 seed in the East. If that's the case, the mission is clear: beat North Carolina on Saturday night. If they lose, UNC locks up that #1 in the East and Duke is forced to win the ACC Tournament to have a shot at a #1 out West.

Much more on the UNC game later on in the week and my prediction will be on Saturday during my live blog on WRAL. The link is below along with the box score to Duke's victory tonight...
