You know what really grinds my gears? That Gus Johnson, easily the best college basketball announcer out there today, was not given a regional for this year's tournament. It's an absolute travesty that Gus didn't get a region this year. Last year, he got the West region with Memphis, Bradley, UCLA, and Gonzaga. And, we all remember his classic call from that UCLA/Gonzaga game that led Greg Gumbel to say "Don't worry, Gus will be out of the hospital for tomorrow's game."
The job he did this year for both the Ohio State/Xavier game and the Louisville/ Texas A&M was as good as it gets. That Ron Lewis game-tying 3-pointer call will be played over and over again especially if Ohio State wins it all. So, why doesn't this man have a region this year? One reason: James Brown. No, not "Play that funky music white boy" or "Living in America" James Brown but the scrub that defected from Fox's NFL Pregame. Supposedly, he has it in his contract that he must do a regional for the tournament every year. That's an absolute joke. There are clearly two announcers that are the best around that are nowhere to be found after the first weekend: Johnson and Ian Eagle, who is spectacular.
Listen, I understand Gus Johnson can't do the Final 4 because Nantz and the disgruntled Billy Packer have been doing it for years. I understand that but do I have to see Dick Enberg and Jay Bilas doing a region? First, Bilas works for ESPN and then for 2 weeks out of the year, he works for CBS? What the hell is that? Anyone close to BRB knows how much I detest Bilas, surprisingly so considering he is "Duke Boy." Keep criticizing Duke and saying Coach K botched up the Gerald Henderson fiasco just to save face with your buddies at ESPN Jay. You're dead to me and any Duke fan who is keeping their eyes open. From now on, treat the Duke family as if it were the Corleone family, NEVER GO AGAINST THE FAMILY AGAIN JAY! Sorry for the Bilas digression. Can CBS buyout Enberg and send him into an early retirement? He's putrid, dreadful, and just plain old horrible. Down 61-58, Southern Illinois attempted a 3 and Enberg proclaims "For the win...no wait, I mean for the tie" Are you kidding me? You're not getting that from poor old Gus. Sure, his "El Tigre" bit on Edgar Sosa was a bit overblown but the passion and enthusiasm is there and he makes you want to watch college basketball.
He gives off the impression that he would announce these games for free and that's what you want from an announcer. All politics and seniority aside, this should be the lineup for the regions next year:
Nantz/Packer - I dread Packer but he knows basketball and Nantz is very accomplished
Lundquist/Rafferty - good chemistry, Rafferty is a much better version of Dickie V
Gus Johnson/Dan Bonner or Len Elmore - You know how I feel about Gus
Ian Eagle/Jim Spanarkel - Another guy who would do games for free
From today, March 29th, until next year, we need to find a way to get Gus back into the regionals. How? I have no idea...
